Dog training on bite inhibition

The most important thing a dog needs to learn from puppy to adult dog is good bite inhibition. Even a very friendly and properly socialized dog is extremely dangerous if he is not properly trained to control his bite. What is dog bite inhibition? In my own simple meaning, it is the dog’s ability to control the force of its bite without causing injury. If the dog was not trained when he was still a puppy, he cannot measure his limit to bite. In most cases, the dog will deliver a deep bite. Good bite inhibition does not mean that the dog does not bite, but rather that in case your dog does bite, it will not cause any serious harm.

Two things are needed to teach your dog about bite inhibition. One is to let him play with another dog to develop dog-to-dog bite inhibition. The other is to teach dog bite inhibition towards people.

A puppy should play bite with other puppies. In this way, he can develop his bite control well into adulthood. The more the pup plays at biting, the more he learns different levels of force that may or may not harm. If you are watching puppies play, sometimes the bites become harsh and a puppy may feel hurt and stop the play session. In this way, the other pup learns that he has to soften the bite to prevent his play session from ending. Another advantage of letting your dog play with another dog is to improve her socialization with another dog.

The puppy must also learn the inhibition of biting people. It is very important that this is done at a younger age as the jaw is still softer compared to an adult dog. A puppy’s teeth are much sharper compared to an adult dog’s, so extra caution should be used. It is a bit difficult to do this training with an adult dog as it can cause serious injury if not properly controlled. You can let your puppy play bite you, but you should give him a good response if you feel the bite getting harder. You can do this by giving an action that you are wounded and leaving the game session. This is the same as when a puppy plays bite to another puppy, when one gets hurt, the game stops, while the other puppy cries. Give him a few minutes to think and play with him again. This time, he already knows that his cock must be softer than before. You should do this exercise frequently as the more he practices his bite, the more control he gains as he reaches adulthood. Sometimes you can exaggerate his action so that he develops his limit for the softest possible bite.

As I mentioned earlier, even a well behaved dog that is not trained in bite inhibition is extremely dangerous should the dog be provoked. It can’t prevent some accidents from happening, such as stepping on a sleeping dog, a child suddenly jumping on the dog while the dog is eating, closing the car door while catching the dog’s tail, and many other incidents. If the dog is trained in bite inhibition, you can avoid any sudden deep bites from the dog. As a dog owner, you are more confident in taking your dog with you to socialize with other people and other dogs if you know your dog has good bite inhibition.
