Many uses of citronella

Citronella is made from Cymbopogon, a genus of grasses commonly found in warm temperatures such as in tropical regions. The tall, perennial herbs commonly known as lemongrass, barbed wire grass, silky heads, fever grass, lemon verbena, and of course citronella grass.

Citronella has been used for years to keep pesky insects away while camping or just sitting outside in the backyard on a nice summer night. It has a perfume that repels insects without damaging them. It is safe for the environment and safe for use with animals. The EPA has already looked at it thoroughly.

The best thing about citronella is that it can be used in a number of ways. And all at once is the best way to prevent pesky critters from bothering you and ruining your summer night.

Soap

Citronella chemicals can be used to make perfumery soap. By bathing with citronella soap, you can be sure that the insects will not alight on you overnight. In fact, that’s a surefire way to keep insects from eating you and going deep. Enjoy your evening while everyone slaps and scratches. Don’t be surprised if people start to gravitate towards you overnight.

Candles

Citronella candles are the most common form of insect repellent. Citronella Sunjel cans burn for three hours and you can place them on the picnic table where you are sitting or on a table next to your chair. There is also a citronella enhancer that you can put in any fuel that burns and turn it into an insect repellent. For example, if you have Tiki Torches, you can put Citronella Booster in the Tiki Torch Fuel and “Shazam” you have an insect repellent.

Lice

A little known fact is that citronella can be used to repel head and body lice. Citronella oils that are put into skin formulas can be used on the scalp and all over the body to keep lice away from you or your children. That’s an EPA finding, so you can be sure it will work. Do not use it to kill lice or to rid hair of lice after you have found them. It is a preventive measure that you can use to prevent yourself or your children from getting head lice.

Barking dogs

This is another little-known finding. However, Citronellas has been found to calm barking dogs. Isn’t that unique? If you have a barking dog or if your neighbor’s dog is ruining your night, light up some citronella. See if it doesn’t work. Check the wind factor and put the Citronella upwind. That way you will veer off in the right direction and calm the barking dog and turn into a silent beast.

Citronella is perfect for keeping insects away. But I bet you didn’t know that it also repels lice and calms down barking dogs. Those are interesting by-products of the best bug repellent to come out since the fly swatter. Enjoy your summer … make sure you never run out of citronella!
