Medical Billing & Coding Schools: Learn About AHIMA Accredited Classes

Medical billing and coding is an excellent career option. However, if you want to be able to get a good position in this field, you must first get the proper education. The minimum training you should receive for this field is a certificate, which usually doesn’t take that long to complete. For the best results, you should always choose an accredited program. There are several American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) accredited medical billing and coding schools available to choose from.

Currently, there are 35 accredited programs available. There are schools offering these training programs in Oklahoma, South Carolina, Maryland, Missouri, Illinois, Washington, Florida, California, Arizona, Minnesota, Texas, North Dakota, Arkansas, Montana, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Nevada, and New Sweater. Some states have more programs available than others.

For those who don’t live near one of the accredited certificate programs, there are nine accredited medical billing and coding schools that offer a distance learning option. These are the AHIMA Core Coding Program, Dakota State University, Kaplan Continuing Education, Lone Star College – North Harris, Montana State University – College of Technology, North Dakota State College of Science, Santa Barbara City College, Shoreline Community College, and Trident Technical Middle School. The availability of these online options gives everyone access to an accredited program to take medical coding classes and earn their certificate.

There are other medical billing and coding schools that offer certificates available in addition to the ones listed above, but these are not AHIMA accredited. Accreditation means that the school has been shown to be teaching all the skills necessary for the job. Attending one of these accredited programs will mean that you will be better prepared to start work, and it will also be easier for you to get certified, which employers prefer as it means that you have definitely shown that you have the knowledge to get the job done. .

If you prefer a longer educational program that is more in-depth, there are also programs available to earn your associate’s degree or your bachelor’s degree. These programs take two to four years to complete, depending on the degree you aspire to. You want to make sure you look for programs that are accredited by CAHIMA, as this is the organization that accredits these longer study programs.
