The Quarterback Giving Back to the World – Meet Dan Marino

Daniel Constantine Marino Jr. was better known as Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino. He was born on September 15, 1961 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dan Marino was recognized as one of the best quarterbacks in American football history. The Miami Dolphins drafted University of Pittsburgh quarterback Dan Marino in 1983. From then on, he literally rewrote the NFL record book in the passing section at 48 touchdown passes. He earned Rookie of the Year honors in the same year. He was the first player to pass for 5,000 yards to finish with a remarkable 5,084 yards in a season. He pretty much set six league records. He became the Most Valuable Player in the NFL. Dan Marino’s passing progress continued to set records for yards and completions. On August 7, 2005 he was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Dan Marino Foundation

The Dan Marino Foundation was established in 1992. The organization’s mission is to raise funds to support various children’s charities located in South Florida. Supports intervention programs for children with special needs. Children with chronic illnesses and developmental disabilities have benefited from the organization’s outreach services. Funds were also committed to provide research on treatment programs.

Marine Autism Research Institute (MARI)

The organization, along with the joint effort of the University of Miami and Vanderbilt University, coordinated and worked together to research new strategies that will lead to the understanding, treatment, and prevention of autism. The research covers genetics, electrophysiology, brain imaging, and clinical and educational initiatives.

The Dan Marino Center at Miami Children’s Hospital

This has a state-of-the-art gym, adapted aquatic center and office space for use by occupational and physical therapist services. This is a nationally recognized aquatics program created specifically for the recreation and increased activity of children with special needs outside of their clinical therapy. Pediatric programs provided are aquatic therapy; health, wellness and prevention programs; multimodal interactive language enrichment; Swimming classes; summer program and aquatic rehabilitation program for sports orthopedic injuries.

Childnett.TV

Childnett.TV was the first free web TV channel of its kind available to families and professionals around the world. This is in an effort to provide information and share resources worldwide for children with autism and neurodevelopmental disorders. The program also includes personal stories, therapies and the latest medical advances.

Marino Swim Central Adaptive Aquatic Certification

Swim instructors work with children with developmental disabilities for their safety and increased physical activity.

University from Miami Center for Autism and Related Disabilities/Nova Southeastern University (UM/NSU CARD)

The UM/NSU CARD provides individualized direct assistance to children and adults who have autism, pervasive developmental disorders, and sensory disabilities with disabling conditions.

vanderbilt University Institute for Research and Treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders (TRIAD)

TRIAD is a program that provides treatment services for children with autistic disorders. It also provides training and knowledge for their families and service providers.
