Canine-Self-Defense Confrontations

That was the title of the article in the Santa Fe New Mexican on the morning of Friday, February 9, 2006: “Dog Confrontations”

Natalie Storey’s story, no, I’m not making it up, it’s partly like that. “When Kate Jewel takes her blue healer, Niki, for a walk, they are no longer alone. Jewel, a slim 58-year-old woman, carries pepper spray, a device that emits a high-frequency sound to scare away animals, and a gun miniature electric

“All of this to fight the dogs. After she and Niki were attacked by three other dogs on November 14 on Borrego Trail, Jewel became terrified of other people’s dogs.

“I love dogs. I can understand the joy of dogs wanting to run free. But people let their dogs run free and don’t understand the consequences of their actions.”

Well said Kate. The device she was referring to is the “dog tracker,” which uses ultrasonic technology that produces a high-pitched sound audible only to dogs. This can be used up to 15 feet away. The pepper spray she referred to is a Mace brand EPA approved spray that cannot harm the dog.

Both can be used by delivery people, walkers, runners, cyclists to prevent dogs from attacking humanely.

Each year, 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs ranging from a minor bite to a major attack, according to the Humane Society of the USA. Many others fall victim to the terror experienced by a hounding dog. Now there is a way to stop dog attacks without injuring the dogs or you.

You are most likely reading this because dog attacks have touched your life in some way or you want to be proactive and protect yourself and your family from the ravages and fear of dog attacks. That is the first step.
