Depression Associated With Low Back Pain Can Be Alleviated With Chiropractic Care

Those who have a history of low back pain are susceptible to depression, which can be helped with chiropractic care.

Chronic lower back pain is something that many people suffer from. Enduring this type of pain, while physically challenging, can also lead to emotional struggles. Not surprisingly, ongoing back symptoms can lead to emotional depression.

In my 35 years of practicing chiropractic, I have seen people who have suffered from low back pain for many years. By helping to alleviate their discomfort, these people can live without pain. This allows them to be able to do normal chores around the house and yard, sleep better, and get some degree of exercise, either by walking or participating in an exercise class. You can be sure that this helps your emotional state immensely.

A research study published in Rehabilitation Nurse, January 2019, studied this condition. Among a group of 152 older adults, the researchers found that those with a history of back pain were more likely to experience depression. The findings suggest that low back pain may be a potential risk for increased depression in older adults.

This means that managing a patient’s back conditions can provide mental health benefits.

Fortunately, chiropractic care has been shown to help alleviate chronic low back discomfort which, in turn, can help alleviate associated emotional depression.

Many people who suffer from chronic low back pain are under the mistaken impression that they have to live with their pain forever. They may have seen doctors who gave them medicine to control their pain. They may have gone to physical therapy where they receive stretching and strengthening exercises. When these measures provide little or no relief, they incorrectly believe that they have exhausted all steps to help with their condition.

However, if they seek another avenue that involves chiropractic therapy, many will see the back relief they are looking for. What sets chiropractic care apart from other therapies is the chiropractic adjustment. A chiropractic adjustment, also known as manipulative therapy, helps realign and create proper movement in the joints of the spine and pelvis. This is specifically what most people need to relieve lower back discomfort.

Chiropractors have been helping people with low back pain for over 125 years. Chiropractic care is a safe and natural method of helping chronic low back pain sufferers without the use of addictive pain relievers or back surgery.
