Dog clothing has become a very lucrative business for many canine lovers. You can now buy dog clothes with total comfort, both online and in boutiques; especially in the larger cities. Owning smaller dogs is very popular these days, partly due to the fact that they are easy to take with you, and also because many people live in smaller spaces and can accommodate a smaller pet.
I must admit, I have a few dog jackets for my little Yorkillon mix. When it rains a lot, I put a light raincoat on him because he absolutely hates going out in the rain. When it gets really cold outside (below zero degrees Fahrenheit), I put a red fleece-lined jacket on him, which keeps his belly warm and prevents the snow from “grooming” and matting his fur. This is as far as I’ll go with dressing my dog.
I have seen numerous websites that sell all kinds of dog clothes. Everything from t-shirts, hoodies, boots, and even pajamas! I know the media shows a lot of famous women carrying their small dogs dressed in outfits, and it somehow became ‘trendy’ or ‘classy’ to dress dogs in all sorts of horrible outfits. It seems to me that they see their dogs as toys or dolls in a way. Fun little things to play with and make fashion statements to the world!
I can’t even imagine putting my dog in pajamas at night! Talk about unnatural! I know there are a lot of people out there who disagree with me. They think they have the right to clothe their dogs if they want to, which I agree with, but I honestly don’t think dogs that have to put up with changing clothes several times a day are the happiest creatures in the world.
Now I also know that there are people who do not believe that a dog should wear any type of clothing, not even a rain or winter jacket. I can say that I think dog outerwear has become quite acceptable for some of the practical reasons I mentioned above. I’ve never talked to a dog owner who has closets full of clothes for his four-legged friends, so I can’t really say what his justifications are for this behavior. All I can say is that I personally find it a bit disturbing and totally ridiculous. What do you think?
