How to adopt an animal from an animal shelter

There are very few people whose hearts do not melt at the sight of a kitten or puppy, especially when they need a home. But when it comes to pet ownership, everyone seems to think purebred. Every person who is considering getting a pet really does owe a trip to their local animal shelter. Where you will find the most wonderful dogs and cats of both mixed and pure breeds that need a home. Ages may vary but there will surely be something for you. Not only will you get a best friend, but you’ll be giving a service animal a home.

First decide that you are sure you really want a pet. You never want to take an animal home and then have to return it. That’s not fair. It’s also a good idea to decide what size animal you want.

Second, decide if you want a man or a woman. In most states, most pets must be neutered before they can be brought home, so sex really only matters as far as the personality traits associated with the sex of the animal.

Next, you need to decide if you want a kitten, a puppy, or a senior dog that is already housetrained. This really depends on you, taking into account your schedule or patience. Sometimes an older person may find that an older pet will be a better companion and need less training.

Also, after choosing a pet, especially if it is a young animal, you may want to check what it will be like when it grows up so as not to be surprised. Sometimes a very small puppy grows into a very large dog. Find out if the breeds get along with children and other pets, again, you want to make sure you’re satisfied. Remember that this is a lifetime commitment to your future pet.

Lastly, before you bring your pet home, check with the people at the shelter to see what kind of care your new pet will need. Such as food, exercise and veterinary care. Be excited that you are about to begin a wonderful journey and at the same time, you are giving a service animal a second chance at life.
