Saint Lucia: where to go and what to do

When you think of St. Lucia, you probably think of endless golden beaches and spending your entire vacation doing nothing more strenuous than working on your tan. However, while that is certainly a possibility, there are plenty of things to see and places to go when you stay in a place like the famous East Winds. St. Lucia has a wide range of attractions, and while it may be tempting to lounge around the resort and sip cocktails all day, you should get out and explore.

These are some of the best things to do on this wonderful Caribbean island.

Diving

As with many Caribbean destinations, the island is a top diving location and one of the main reasons people are tempted to book a luxury vacation somewhere like East Winds. St. Lucia has many great dive sites, and whether you’re just starting out or have been doing it for years, you’ll find plenty of options here, including reef and wreck diving. There are also a number of schools to choose from, if you’re a beginner, and experienced guides to help you get the most out of your scuba experience.

The deep Waiwinette Freighter wreck is one of the best dives off the island and you can also go to Anse La Raye which is a drift dive with strange rock formations. Anse Chastanet, in the southwest of the island, is another great option.

See a living volcano

The one thing not to be missed while here is the spectacular Soufriere Volcano. This dormant volcano last erupted in the 18th century, so it’s perfectly safe to visit, but there’s plenty of volcanic activity to see, including boiling mud and steaming water rising through vents. When you stay at the fabulous East Winds, all of St. Lucia’s natural attractions are within easy reach, but this has to be one of the best.

visit the pitons

The World Heritage Pitons are two small mountains near Soufrière in the southwest of the island. They are made up of the Great Piton and Petit Piton, which are 771 meters and 743 meters respectively. You can admire them from ground level or hike to the top for great views if you’re feeling energetic. It’s a tough challenge, but it only takes about two hours.

In addition to all these activities, there are also many places that you can visit on the island. Here are a few.

Castries

This is the main city of the island and there is a lot to do here. Some of the top attractions include the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Government House, the Municipal Library, and Fort Charlotte. There are also some good beaches nearby.

soufriere

As mentioned above, this is located in the southwest of the island. It used to be the capital and was home to many plantations (you can visit an old hacienda during your stay here).

islet of gros

This is popular with tourists and one of the most fun activities here is attending the regular Gros Islet street party. If you get the chance to go, get ready to party all night!

Isla Paloma National Park

Pigeon Island is on the north shore and covers 44 acres of land. There is a small fee to enter, but it’s worth a look. In addition to its natural beauty, you’ll also get to see historical attractions like the 18th-century Fort Rodney.

This beautiful island is the sum of much more than its beautiful beaches, although they are truly impressive! There’s plenty for visitors to see and do during a short (or longer) break by staying in luxurious accommodation somewhere like East Winds. St. Lucia is the perfect tropical vacation destination, so come see what all the fuss is about!
