Still life painting is one of the most popular and interesting art forms, which involves using the most used medium to depict images – still life. Still life is defined as an array of still objects put together in a very unique manner. In still life painting the main focus is on the subject, rather than on the objects placed in it. The magic behind still life paintings however is that still they can often show a totally different approach to how the regular objects around us are viewed.
One of the main genres in still life painting is the Fauvist genre. In this particular genre the main subject is a farm or a ranch with a small number of humans, cattle or sheep present. These subjects often focus on the character of the farmer or the ranch owner. There are also plenty of landscapes depicted in this kind of paintings.
Another well known and popular genre of still life painting is the abstract type. The main idea behind this type of painting is to suggest the endlessness of the universe. A typical image of an abstract nature shows a vast expanse of sky with a few clouds hanging overhead. This is done by placing the still life subject matter in the center of the canvas, creating a sort of frame around it. When the sky turns to the right and a cloud appears, it is followed by another cloud just on the horizon.

An extremely popular still life painting is the depiction of cut flowers. In this case the flower is usually in a very unusual position, either lying down or upside down. The implication here is the endlessness of nature and the ways that human beings have damaged it through neglect. A common way to portray the cut flower is through a tree; sometimes these trees are used as simple houses, with a pot sitting on top of it. When this occurs, it can be considered symbolic of an unfinished marriage because both of the couples are involved.
A type of still life painting, which is growing in popularity is the portrait painting. Portrait paintings usually depict one person in a landscape, such as a field or garden. The concept behind this still life genre is to suggest that humans are so small that they are being observed from a great distance. Sometimes, the subjects are sketched in the portrait so that we can better understand their personalities.
No matter what the subject matter is, the use of still life painting in modern art forms is growing in popularity. The artists creating these works of art are following in the footsteps of the masters of the past. Many of the paintings being created today are being described as modern by some critics. It seems that as technology progresses so do the techniques being used by modern artists to portray their art.
