Are there any pills, vitamins, or supplements I can take if I’m trying to conceive a girl or a boy?

I often hear from individuals or couples looking for an easy way to choose the gender of their baby. To that end, I sometimes have people ask me if there is a pill, vitamin, supplement, or medication they can take to help them choose the gender of their baby or have a baby boy or a girl. This is a good idea, no doubt. It would make things a lot easier if you could take a pill to make sure you get the gender of baby you want. But I’m afraid that’s not how it works, although people often try this method. Below I’ll tell you some of the things people try, why I think this rarely works as well as expected, and what I think works best.

First though, here is the thinking behind this idea. People often take vitamins or supplements in an attempt to become more alkaline and less acidic for a boy and more acidic and less alkaline for a girl. I should also clarify that I am not referring to fertility treatments that a doctor may prescribe to help you get pregnant. What I’m talking about is over-the-counter natural supplements and vitamins that people take at home to try to choose the sex of their baby.

Supplements sometimes tried by people who want a baby boy: The most common type of supplement that people use when trying to become alkaline or less acidic is antacids. You may have taken or heard of these for acid reflux. They often have a very chalky taste. The thinking behind this is that if you take antacids, this will have an effect on (and hopefully decrease) your vaginal acidity. And, if you can make your vagina less acidic, weaker male sperm will have an easier time reaching the egg.

While I understand the theory behind this, I have tested my PH before and after using antacids and had far better results using a combination of diet and douching. But you can really try this out for yourself very easily. And I should add that many warn against the use of these substances because they decrease calcium absorption and are said to risk bacterial overgrowth in the gut. So while I see no harm in using these and then testing your PH, I would advise against and even warn against relying entirely on this method or overusing any substance. I think dieting and showering are safer and make shorter changes to your body.

Supplements or vitamins sometimes used by people who want to have a baby girl: Many people believe that supplements like calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D help people who are trying to have a girl. Some take it even further and take acidifying supplements like cranberry pills or grapefruit extract. Once again, I strongly suggest that you test yourself after this use and stress that you should never go overboard with any supplement or vitamin. And I also have to tell you that a lot of the fruit and citrus supplements that people take to get more acidic don’t always work as planned. Not all fruits or even all citrus foods are metabolized as acid. Reactions can vary widely, so testing is important. In my own tests, I again had better results with real food than with pills or supplements.

Finally, I want to emphasize that PH is not the only consideration when it comes to choosing the sex of your baby. Although many people would love to think that taking supplements is all they have to worry about, this is not the case. Timing intercourse and conception correctly as it relates to ovulation and using the correct sexual positions that are unique to you and your partner can be very important.
