History has plenty of evidence that good evolved from evil. In more moderate terms, great things are achieved from struggle and struggle. The result is usually far beyond expectations. Today, with the experience of the United States, Canada and Europe, the NHL is the world’s leading ice hockey league on the professional field. It has also been recognized as one of the top professional sports leagues in North America. When the NHL started, it only had five teams. Over time, the NHL witnessed expansions, declines, and relocations and is eventually made up of 30 teams, 24 of them American and 6 Canadian. However, many of the league’s players on the 2005-06 rosters were born in Canada.
The Depression in the 1930s and World War II saw a drastic drop in the number of teams in the NHL league. In 1942, the number of teams was reduced to six. They were: the Montreal Canadiens, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Detroit Red Wings, the Boston Bruins, the Chicago Black Hawks, and the New York Rangers. These teams are still known as the Original Six. For the next 25 years, these were the only teams in the NHL.
The National Hockey League is divided into two distinct seasons. The regular season begins the first Wednesday in October and continues through early April. The Playoff season begins in April and continues through June. The latter is an elimination tournament where two teams heat up on the ice to win the best-of-seven series. The final team becomes the owner of the Stanley Cup.
