Golf Tips for Women – Grip, Posture and Chest Battles

When my husband started teaching me how to play golf, I found his advice helpful, but there was a lot he didn’t understand about being a female golfer. For example, he had no breasts to interfere with her swing, and he wasn’t self-conscious about sticking his butt out when he took her stance. He made me feel foolish and uncomfortable and often frustrated when my swing didn’t work like his. I easily found the problem was that I had to find my swing and a good way to do that was to work with an instructor experienced with female golfers.

I suggest that all women find a golf instructor or a man who has experience working with women to get the most out of your coaching experience. Here are some simple golf tips for women to get started too.

get a grip

The first thing you need to learn is a proper grip. Even if you’re not an experienced golfer or have no idea what a handicap is, you can seem like you know what you’re doing with the right grip. Proper grip is the foundation of every swing, so you can’t begin to learn anything else until you master this. With the right grip, you might miss a shot here and there, but at least you’ll always look like you know what you’re doing.

Grip down an inch or so on the shaft for better club control. The shaft should run diagonally from just below the little finger across the palm of the hand and to the base of the index finger. Then wrap your fingers around the shaft so the stick rests on your fingertips. Then place your thumb in the spot just to the right of center. The shaft of the stick should be at the heel of the palm of the hand.

When bringing the other hand, your hands should form a V that points between your right ear and your right shoulder. This will give you a square clubface at impact. Avoid too strong a grip and avoid too weak a grip or your club may fly off. This is something you can practice over and over again at home until you master the grip.

perfect posture

Second to your grip, but just as important is your stance. This is something I struggled to get right until I learned a simple trick that I practiced over and over at home. You don’t want to approach the ball hunched over, and you also don’t want to be too stiff. Practice correct stance by placing a club across your back, throughout your twist. Hold one end at the top above your head and the other end under your butt. Now lie down so that the shaft of the stick is flush with your spine and your spine is straight. This is the stance to have as you approach your swing, and you will need to practice it to maintain it throughout your swing.

Many women get into a good position, but lose their posture while swinging. You should also make sure that you keep a wide gap between your chin and chest and not drop your head or chin against your chest. You should maintain this stance throughout your swing, allowing room for your shoulder to rotate freely on your backswing. It will feel awkward at first, but practice it without hitting a ball and just swinging. Then work your way up to hit, but don’t worry about what happens to the ball after it makes contact; Just focus on your posture. Eventually, you can put all the pieces together in your live swing.

chest battles

Are your breasts getting in the way of your swing? Wondering if you have to be an A cup to master golf? How do the professionals do it? If your chest gets in the way of your swing, there’s a solution, and it doesn’t involve duct tape.

To fix this problem, in steering, don’t stand too tall as you’ll see most men do. Instead, you’ll want to round your shoulders a little, just a little, to allow your arms to hang down from your body. This will give you more room to swing freely around your chest, without affecting your swing. The inside of the elbows and arms should not squeeze the breasts. It also helps to wear a good comfortable sports bra to support and keep everything in place.
