The original The Jaws was one of the most successful movies of all time and is considered one of the quintessential horror movies. Jaws was directly responsible for keeping large numbers of people out of the water and for the great white shark’s bad reputation. While the sequels that follow weren’t exactly of the same quality as the original (read: they sucked), they were nonetheless somewhat successful. So we already know that people have been willing to go see the Jaws sequels.
Add that to the fact that remakes and reboots are all the rage in Hollywood right now. After all, why take a chance on a new series or new idea when you could reboot or reimagine a classic series that’s sure to appeal to moviegoers no matter what? Batman was relaunched, Superman was relaunched, remakes of horror movies and action movies are all the rage. The Star Wars “prequels” were massively successful, and the list goes on and on.
