Between the vertebrae in the back, we have discs. These discs are filled with fluid and are used to cushion and separate the vertebrae in your back. Think of the disk as a sponge.

This creates more room for our discs to reabsorb fluids. By the way, we naturally do this at night when we are asleep. If you are dehydrated or not getting enough sleep, you are not reabsorbing enough fluids and you will have some soreness the next day.

As we decompress, the increased space creates a negative vacuum and literally sucks the damping fluids into the discs.
Here’s some boring terminology: A bulging disc is when the fluid inside the disc is trying to get out through a weak spot, but hasn’t ruptured the disc wall. A herniated disc is when the wall HAS ruptured and is leaking. Imagine stepping on one side of a jelly-filled donut.
