Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen Problems of health, grooming and living conditions of the dog

Health problems. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a mostly healthy dog, with a life expectancy of 14 years and sometimes more. However, they are predisposed to some eye conditions, including glaucoma. The main problems of this breed are epilepsy and hypothyroidism. Skin and food allergies are also not common. It is important to have this breed on the proper diet to prevent weight gain.

Cleanliness. For the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen dog, grooming is a reasonably easy task. A weekly brushing or combing will remove any residue from his coat. Care must be taken to keep the ears clean, along with trimming the nails and cleaning the teeth. The only other real consideration is keeping the fur on his paws neatly trimmed and bathing as needed, but not too often, as this can destroy the natural oils in his coat.

Life conditions. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen can live pretty much anywhere, including an apartment, as long as it’s properly exercised. He is an active dog and prefers cooler weather, although they will do well in hot weather as well. When exercising the dog should not be let off the leash, their hunting instincts are so strong that they will chase any small animal they see. Any other pet should be considered in the family home, as you don’t want to be introduced to your child’s favorite rabbit, after the dogs play. For this breed, hunting is an instinct, there is no malice, but if you have smaller pets in the house, expect them to be hunted.
