White Barbecue Sauce: The Best Gourmet Barbecue Sauce

Barbecue isn’t what it used to be. When I was growing up, the only time my family started the grill or smoker was in the summer and on the weekends. Today, people grill every night and all year long. Barbecue sauces have also evolved since then. There used to be only a couple of options in your local market. But now, with the invention of “super” markets, the number of barbecue sauces you can buy locally has grown significantly. For those gourmet barbecue sauces, the web is probably the only place you’ll find these unique sauces. If you don’t live in the Alabama area, the only place you’ll find traditional white barbecue sauce like Big Bob Gibson’s is on the web, or of course you can try making it yourself.

Alabama Traditional Barbecue Sauce uses mayonnaise as the base instead of ketchup, vinegar, or any of the other more typical barbecue sauce bases. It is clearly a favorite region. Bob Gibson of Decatur, Alabama is credited with inventing white sauce in 1925. Friends and family first enjoyed this secret recipe sauce over chicken and pork at weekend barbecues where boards were nailed to the trees to make the tables. Today, this famous mayonnaise-based condiment is traditionally used for basting chicken, seafood, and pork.

White BBQ Sauce is as synonymous with the state with Alabama as the legendary “BAMA” football program. White BBQ Sauce’s intriguing flavor complements salads and makes a great base for chicken, pork, and turkey. You can also use the white sauce as an ingredient to add an extra kick to your favorite cole or potato salad. However, because your local store’s shelves are dominated by many incarnations of tomato-based sauces and white barbecue sauce is a regional anomaly, most people outside of Alabama haven’t tried this flavorful mix.

Like many barbecue sauces, you want to apply this only at the very end of grilling or smoking. It will break and separate if it gets too hot. Use this sauce on chicken and turkey. It is also good on pork. Alabama White Barbecue Sauce has a tangy flavor that makes a great addition to grilled foods.
