The Yorkshire Terrier, commonly known as a Yorkie, is a member of the adorable group of toy dogs. It is a combination of the best terrier breeds in England: black and tan English terrier, Paisley terrier and Clydesdale terrier. And compared to other terriers, they have distinctive tan and blue colored hair.
This breed of dog originated in Yorkshire, England sometime in the 19th century and came to America only in the late 19th century as there were many varieties and sizes for this breed. However, Yorkies did not make a unique name for themselves until the early part of the 20th century. It was also during this period that Yorkshire Terriers were preferred to other breeds by dog enthusiasts due to their small size.
Despite their size, the character of the dogs of this breed is usually bold, courageous and confident. They almost seem oblivious to their size and height. However, at all times they are eager for adventure and fun. When it comes to bonding with other dogs, Yorkies can be a bit aggressive; hostile and may bark at other dogs, especially smaller ones. Yorkies definitely keep the old gruff temperament that terriers are known for.
Conservation and maintenance
Like other toy breeds, the Yorkie requires a lot of exercise. Since this breed is quite small, you can get the necessary exercise by running around the house from room to room. However, this should not be used as a reason for owners not to walk their Yorkies. Dogs of this breed would love to take brisk walks in the fresh air with their owners. However, you should do well to keep Yorkies on a leash to avoid problems with smaller dogs or other animals.
When it comes to living arrangements, Yorkies are not suited for outdoor living. They would prefer companionship with their breed or family and/or with their owners. If you need to leave your dog outdoors, you need to ensure there is enough shelter space/equipment and bedding.
Yorkshire Terrier dogs are likely to grow very long hair. If you choose to keep your dog’s hair at its natural length, it will require grooming. However, most pet owners prefer to cut their Yorkie’s coat regularly so they don’t need to brush too much: just three or four times a week. Long-haired Yorkies need more brushing than this, as long hair will tend to mat or matte.

However, the Yorkie generally does not have any major health problems; owners need to be on the lookout for patellar dislocation. This condition is characterized by dislocation of the patella and is common in miniature and toy breeds; sometimes of a congenital nature. Veterinarians may also suggest that Yorkie owners have their dogs undergo specific tests such as eye exams, liver ultrasound, and knee dysplasia exams.
A healthy Yorkshire Terrier can live up to 16 years; or live the average life that is 10 to 15 years. In general, smaller dog breeds have a longer lifespan than larger dogs, as they are less at risk of cardiovascular and skeletal diseases.
