The 7 most important things to consider before renting a bike

There are many bicycle rental services available in various major cities and tourist attractions/destinations in the United States. Here are some things to ask or look for before selecting a bike rental service.

  1. Type of bike you want to rent. Depending on the type of trip or tour you are going to take, you must select a bike that suits your trip. Some bike rental shops only offer single speed ‘heavy bikes’ or cruiser bikes which are fun to ride, but can be difficult to pedal if there are hills or slight inclines that require walking up the bike.
  2. Frame sizes to match your height. Have your height measurement handy when you call to reserve your bike to make sure the bike rental service has bike frames that match your height.
  3. Pause low. In the event of a breakdown or some other event that causes the bike to stop working and become unmountable, what are your options? The bike rental service should be willing to deliver a replacement bike within an hour or two free of charge or at least fix the problem.
  4. Safety equipment. In some metropolitan areas it has become city policy to require the use of certain bicycle safety equipment. Wearing a proper bicycle helmet is of paramount importance to your personal safety. Lighting and reflectors for nighttime visibility are also important to you and those around you. In some cases, it is required to have a white headlight mounted on the bike when riding after dark. Be sure to ask your bike rental shop if these items are included for free.
  5. Security. If you plan to stop and enjoy some local sights or leave your bike unattended, you should be prepared to secure your rental bike to a sturdy, immovable object. A simple bicycle lock should be provided to you free of charge. Be sure to ask.
  6. Where to ride You may already have a destination or travel plan, however you may be missing out on something truly unique by asking your local bike rental shop where they like to ride. There’s nothing better than a quick insider tip from the locals. A map or brochure may also be available to you.
  7. Prices and discounts. Bikes are usually rented at a daily rate; however, some rental stores have hourly and weekly rates. It is best to ask if there is a discount for multiple rental days, such as over a weekend. Perhaps an offer like, a free day with a two-day weekend rental would be likely. Discounts may also be available for groups of 5 or more cyclists renting bikes.
